Almost the last part of paradise at the coast of the Mediterranean Sea – that is the way some guides begin their descriptions of the natural park of Cabo de Gata-Nijar in the province of Almería. 34000 hectare or 340 km² corresponding to 68000 football fields is the size of this biosphere reserve, that is what UNESCO is calling the park. Indeed, for us it is still a part of paradise.
Sierra de Cabo de Gata, our location is of volcanic origin and is the largest volcanic region of Spain. 15 millions years ago volcanic eruptions began and pushed lead and silver to the surface. Even gold whcih was extracted in our nearby village Rodalquilar since the Romans up until 1966.
This may explain the unique colours of mountains; the bizarre shapes that surround the beaches. It is said, they are the most beautiful beaches of Spain.
